Ex-Sindh Minister Seeks FIR Over Alleged AI-Edited Pictures

Former Sindh minister Ghulam Rasool Unnar has approached a sessions court in Karachi seeking registration of a criminal case against his former wife over alleged AI-edited pictures, fake social media posts and threats.

Unnar has asked the court to direct police to register an FIR under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA). The allegations have been made by Unnar in his court application and have not been established by the court.

According to his application, Unnar first came into contact with Razia Arbab through social media. He said she later proposed marriage, and the two eventually married through a video call in the presence of witnesses. He stated that a dower of Rs100,000 had been paid.

Unnar alleged that Arbab kept her face covered with a niqab during the marriage ceremony. He said that after meeting her in person following the marriage, he discovered that photographs she had previously shared with him had allegedly been filtered or altered using artificial intelligence.

The former minister said the couple later separated and he eventually divorced her. He further alleged that after the separation, Arbab continued posting claims about his death and sharing fabricated images on social media.

Unnar also accused her of demanding money and sending abusive and threatening messages through WhatsApp. According to his application, he was allegedly threatened with the release of personal videos and with physical harm if he did not provide money.

He told the court that the alleged publication of false information, defamatory claims and manipulated images amounted to offences under PECA. He asked the court to order the relevant police station to record his statement and register an FIR.

After hearing his arguments, Additional District and Sessions Judge (South) Muhammad Aslam Sheikh issued notices to the SSP Complaint Cell, the SHO of Defence police station and the person named as the proposed accused.

The court directed the respondents to submit their responses by August 17. The allegations therefore remain subject to the court proceedings and any investigation that may follow.
